"Little Gaby" Memories

I have been home in Iowa for the Holiday break and have been loving the time with he family (that I never get to see enough of these days). We were all sitting around talking the other night and telling funny stories from when we were little. Some of the stories about myself as a little girl, I couldn't help but laugh at to see how they related to me as an adult now. So for your entertainment here are some old gems from my childhood.

The Velveteen Rabbit

When I was Little I loved that story so much. I had the book, a puzzle, a coloring book, and a movie of it. I also had a stuffed animal I cared so much for. Rover, my stuffed dog was my dearest friend.... there was no need for me to play with imaginary friends with him around (although I still had a VERY healthy imagination). However, this healthy imagination made it hard at times for my young mind to separate reality from fiction. I loved the story so much and believed it was true. As a result because the boy in the story told his rabbit that he loved it and called it a real rabbit the velveteen rabbit turned into a real rabbit and then had to leave the boy.... troubling to a little three year old Gaby who didn't want to be left! But always a constant problem solver, I came up with a solution! I would hug Rover every night before bed look him in the eye and say "I don't love you, You are not real!" I then would look around and if alone quietly whisper in his ear.. "I'm sorry you are real I love you" and then squeeze him tightly through the night so he couldn't turn real on me. I still have that Rover and he makes me happy whenever I see him.

The Art Museum

One day when I was about 4 or 5 my mom took me and my sisters to the Des Moines Art Museum. After walking around for a bit my mom turned to find I wasn't with the group (I didn't wander often... but it had been known to happen before) she retraced her footsteps and found me in a room alone staring at a painting. When she came up to me I whispered at her... "Look mom, you can see the wind" I still remember that painting. There was a hillside and a lake with a tree by it. The tree was being blown in the wind. I like that I was able to "see the wind" then, even if sometimes I miss that now when I look at art.

Mud and freckles

When I was little I was a red headed, freckled faced, uncoordinated little thing. And to make matters worse I grew up in a neighborhood of boys. I was teased relentlessly and spent a great deal of effort trying to change. I was especially desperate in the area of freckles. I tried the lemon juice trick (False) I tried scrubbing really really hard (False), but by far the worst thing I ever did was at the suggestion of the neighborhood boys club. They somehow convinced me of the scientific healing powers of the mud down in the creek behind our house. At their encouraging I covered my face in the mud and then they said if I ate a spoonful the freckles would wash off with the mud. Well, being the turbo and intense person that I still am to this day... I thought well if one spoonful work then 3 will surely be better! (False) Not so bright I guess and I ended up very ill and lucky that I didn't get some terrible disease fro the allege in that mud! It probably goes without saying, but I still have freckles, and am still uncoordinated.... but I don't listen to the neighborhood boys anymore :)

Christmas Cheer in NYC

This season I have had lots of Christmas Cheer in NYC. I went with some friends to Lincoln Center to see Handel's messiah. Beautiful! And I also went to the rockets and watced the Christmas Spectacular. Silly and fun. I think the highlight for me as far as NYC Christmas experience however was last Saturday. I went with a group of friends to St Thomas Cathedral and listened to the boys choir and heard lessons. It was wonderful and inspiring. I love Christmas!

Recent Finds

I just bought these three prints. I have been trying to embrace the thought of finding artwork that makes me happy; and these illustrations fit that bill! (I kind of want to give that rain cloud a big hug)

photo is F-U-N

... especially with a friend! Brenda and I have tried to spend a little time this year photographing for the fun of it. It has been a great way for my mind to feel creative out side of a work photo atmosphere and has just been truly fun. Here are some shots from a shoot we did a while ago but I never posted. (yes, I am playing catchup.. that is not unusual for this blog)

Okay so these are from a long, long while ago I just realized... my hair is dark. Better late than never right?!

Happy Thanksgiving

This year for Thanksgiving I hosted a big dinner at my apartment. We had so much yummy food and a lot a great conversation (I feel like I laughed the entire time!) I was really pleased with how it all turned out. The apartment looked beautiful, the food tasted amazing (thanks everyone for bringing so much great food) , and the people were the best! After dinner and before the traditional Pie course, we went for a walk in the park across the street from my place. The only thing that could have made the day better is if more of my friends and family could have been there! Love you all :)

A Very Late Halloween Post

This year at work for Halloween we sent out an e-mail campaign that had a bunch of my co-workers and myself talking about our favorite products.. and dressed up for Halloween. It was such a fun day on set. Everyone was so happy to dress up and pose for me. I went as a princess.

I have to say though the best part is the behind the scene pictures that Brenda took of me and the copywriter Missy. Nothing like a princess photographing a Devil! - I am sure that is from a fairytale....

I love my Nieces

Last month I went to Ohio for my little niece Elizabeth's baptism. On the Saturday I was visiting there was a fall festival at Ella's school. We went and had a lot of fun watching everyone play around. I was looking through my photos from it tonight and came across this gem!

The best part of this photo is my niece Abbie in the corner. I love that expression. She hit the bottom of the slide and I was expecting serious upset... instead she looked at me and said "Can I do that again?!"

Yeah Yeah Yeahs!

So this is from a while back, but still worth posting! I went with a group of friends to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs concert at Radio City Music Hall and it was AMAZING! This had to be my favorite moment on stage. Yes, Karen O is wearing a head dress!

Rhett Miller and the Serial Lady Killers

Brenda and I went to this concert the other day. It was amazing. He played at Webster Hall (one of my favorite venues in the city) We started out in prob about the 8th row and then worked our way to the second row by the end of the night. He played one of my favorites "Question." It was Amazing!

a very heartfelt goodbye

Today I read this article on NPR.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=112312561

It is funny because I had the same reaction to it that many of my co-workers did.

1. "Wait, reading rainbow is still on the air? I thought it went off the air when I went into high school."
2. "Oh I am so sad about this. I loved that show."

This news really put me into a very nostalgic moment. I have not seen this for years and years but can still vividly remember episodes. Some of my favorites:

LeVar tells us about being an actor and takes us to the set of star trek
We visit an artist that makes Russian Easter eggs
we visit and artist that makes pots in Hawaii and glazes them
We go to a Renaissance festival
and one of my favorites was on stop motion animation

I use to make up book reviews with my friends like we were the kids on the show and we would try to come up with something witty to say like when I reviewed If You Give A Mouse A Cookie "I am telling you this book is worth giving a cookie for"

Such an end to an era. I love you LeVar! I'll see you next time :)

NYC on a Friday Night!

The other day a co-worker mentioned to me that they show free movie on the flight deck of the Intrepid docked in the river. The other Friday I went with a group of friends to watch Jaws ( a movie by the way that gave me years of nightmares as a child... I was even afraid of pools, convinced the floor would fall out and a great white would appear) It was such a great NY experience. There was a great breeze off the water and it started to rain a bit, but that didn't stop us. Everyone just pulled out their umbrellas and sat tight! That is until the lightning started and they had to shew us all off the deck for safety reasons. But even with that and getting completely drenched it was one of the best nights. I am hoping to go to the next movie this summer.

Back to my roots... literally

This summer I made a huge decision. To go back to my "semi" original hair color. My hair changed color over the years naturally depending on how much I was in the sun and I am sure many other scientific things I do not understand. But from the time I was 16 on I was a red head from a bottle. And the last few years in NYC I gradually became darker and darker... even dark brown/black occasionally. This year I let my roots grow a bit to discover that my strawberry blond had become an ashy grey blond :( not a good look for me. So with a little stylist aid and several hours (11 hours and 3 hair appointments) I am back to a much more natural strawberry blond. I still love my dark auburn hair so am not sure how long this will last, but for now it is a fun change. I still don't quite recognize myself when I look in the mirror.....

Before & After

These are just quick shots from the camera on my computer. I will try to get some better shots soon.

I am back....

Ok I am back. After a much to long break and many many threats from friends that they were going to never check this blog again if I didn't write something soon :) I think the best way to recap all that has happened would be to just break down by month major events and then go from there... so here goes.

November:

My sister Erica and friend Anne came to visit for the week of thanksgiving!

We went to the Thanksgiving Day parade.... as usual I didn't fair well be so short in big crowds... but at least I got to see the balloons in the air... and there was the Jonas brothers I heard as they passed by.. lol
We went and saw the nutcracker. I had never been and had so much fun.. the only way it would have been better is if I could have gotten a Shirley Temple at the intermission (It seemed odd to me that they didn't have them)
I also cooked my very first turkey. I was so worried about it, but it turned out great. The meat was falling off the bone.
